BLOCKS AND WIRES ROBOTICS

Legos for some might be only toys, for me, they were a way to learn about science, programming and robotics with the help of my dad. Remembering how much fun I had learning basic programming and physics using LEGOs and my experience in the Robotics Team at Knoxville Catholic High School, I decided to create the Bricks and Wires Robotics Club in collaboration with Centro Hispano, in Knoxville, TN.

We introduced first- and second-grade students to simple machines, as well as programming and robotics, using LEGO Education in both English and Spanish. My first lesson was chaos, with kids running around due to a lack of engagement. I quickly realized that with kids having different skills and even languages, what I prepared was not suitable for them. Two separate, distinctive activities with shorter and faster results, along with continuous input and even improvisation introduced by these kids, were needed to keep them engaged. Working with these kids was the most rewarding activity that I have done, and something that I want to continue to do during college
